Windows 9.x Tweaking
It's the OS we've all come to love and hate at the same time. Yep, it's Windows 9.x. Specifically, I'm mostly going to be referring to Windows 98SE since that is arguably the best, most stable version in the Win 9.x lineup.
I'm making these pages for a couple of reasons. 1) Hopefully I can help someone get faster performance from their machine and 2) It'll remind me of things I missed whenever I re-setup my 9.x machine :) My format for the article will basically walk you through some of the steps I take when setting up my machine.
Installation:
Tip: Create a "cabs" directory on the hard drive, then jump to your CD-ROM and copy everything in the "win98" folder from disc to the new directory (except the other two directories). Jump to the hard drive and run setup from there.
Reason: If you install Windows from a CD-ROM and then ever have to upgrade the OS or install any new components, Windows will (almost) always ask for the CD-ROM. Installing from hard drive circumvents this altogether, but it does require a bit of extra hard drive space to do so.
Tip: When installing W9x, always do a "custom" installtion, then remove all unneccesary components that aren't needed. In my case, I remove: "accessibility options, any chat programs, Macromedia flash plugin, document templates, internet tools and system tools."
Reason: Why install things you don't need? I thankfully don't need accessibility options, I don't use chat programs, I can't stand web flash animations, and my document templates, internet tools and system tools are all third-party software. Besides, if you ever miss them you can always add them later.
